Protecting our nation’s interests: guardian, diplomat and humanitarian force for good.
On a day to day basis the Royal Navy could be preventing conflict, working with our allies on international partnerships, protecting our economy, providing security at sea, maintaining a state of readiness to protect the interests of Britain, and providing humanitarian assistance.
Being in the Royal Navy makes you part of something special. Part of a team. Protecting our nation’s interests, all over the world. It’s the kind of career you can be proud of, and your family can be proud of you for. A way to use your natural skills, and develop new ones that stay with you for life.
A job in the Naval Service means adventure, camaraderie – and lifelong prospects. Every day you make a difference. And no two days are the same. You could be policing the world’s oceans, delivering humanitarian aid when natural or man-made disasters strike. Or you could be deployed in combat. No matter what job you do, you’ll be a key part in operations around the world.
The Naval Service is a team of over 30,000 men and women, from all walks of life. Because of the diversity of what we do, our strength lies in the diversity of our people. We’re more than the sum of our parts.
We champion equality of opportunity for all, and provide an inclusive working environment for everyone, regardless of their race, religion, ethnicity or sexual orientation (we’re listed in The Times Top 50 Employers of Women and achieved a Top 10 position in the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index 2016). Our policy is set out by the First Sea Lord (the Royal Navy’s highest-ranking officer), whose personal Diversity and Inclusion Directive is issued to all Naval Service ships, units and shore establishments.
The role of the Royal Navy isn’t all about combat. Our people are involved in humanitarian aid missions all over the world. They’re restoring power and delivering supplies, for the people who need it most.
Part of a larger cause
The Royal Navy, is an organisation that helps people in need, deploying to some truly unique environments to provide relief, from man-made catastrophes that result in severe poverty, to life threatening natural disasters.
Much of what the Royal Navy does is dedicated to supporting domestic and global communities. Royal navy personnel, all over the world, work hard to protect the vulnerable, safeguard our economy, and build international partnerships.
Career opportunities in the Naval Service
No matter where you are in the world, every day in the Royal Navy is different. That means we need people who are different. People like you, who have the drive to develop the wide-ranging skills that keep the Royal Navy operationally effective on land, on the sea, underneath it, or flying over it.
With such diverse functions, the Naval Service is split into services and branches, with over 100 roles available. Whatever your background, interests or walk of life, there could be a role for you.
A future in the Royal Navy means much more than a monthly salary. Worldwide travel, ongoing professional training, friends and skills you’ll have for life, and a career like no other, are just the start. There’s a raft of practical perks too, because we believe in rewarding our people for what they do – which goes far beyond a pay packet.
Qualifications and skills
It may be that you’re a graduate with a degree under your belt. Or you could have just left school, ready to take on something new and develop some skills. No matter where you’ve come from and where you want to go, a career in the Naval Service means you can gain all the qualifications you need.
You can study for anything from GCSEs, NVQs and Masters Degrees, to fast-track Charterships in disciplines like Engineering.
